Wake County Board of Commissioners

Commissioner James West dies unexpectedly

|

Story Update:

Andrew,

Dr. West had one year left on his term as Commissioner. State law dictates that county boards of commissioners need to approve a qualified candidate who lives in the same district and is nominated by his same party to serve out the remainder of the term. In this case, the Wake County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee would make the nomination, with Commissioners voting to approve that nominee in the next 60 days. You’d have to reach out to the party for more specifics if you need.

Candidate filing for the next, full four-year term for the District 5 seat runs Dec. 5 through Dec. 14.

I hope this helps!

The B&R is awaiting response as to what will happen to the District 5 seat between now and the 2024 election. Will it remain vacant? Will there be an appointment?

Candidate filing for the 2024 primaries are in December.
