Highlights: ShotSpotter detects gunshot sounds and notifies police. Durham had a one-year pilot contract, and the question Monday was whether to renew for three years, at $650,000.
The system has been in the news recently because of Chicago, infamous for its gun violence, announcing it will not renew its contract. ShotSpotter is controversial as to whether it has meaningful public safety benefits, though it does speed up police response time. Critics tend to cite social justice reasons, supposed racial bias.
